Sir John Carmichael-Anstruther, 5th and 2nd Bt. was born on 1 June 1785 at Lincoln's Inn Fields, London, England.1 He was the son of Sir John Anstruther of that Ilk, 4th and 1st Bt. and Maria Isabella Brice.1 He was baptised on 1 July 1785 at St. George's Church, Bloomsbury, London, England.1 He married Jessie Dewar, daughter of Maj.-Gen. David Dewar and Mary Cutler, on 11 January 1817.1 He was also reported to have been married on 11 February 1817.2 He died on 28 January 1818 at age 32.1 He was given the name of John Anstruther of that Ilk at birth.1 He was educated between 1799 and 1802 at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England.1 He matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, on 21 October 1803.1 He was admitted to Lincoln's Inn in 1806.1 He graduated from Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, in 1806 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.).1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Anstruther-Easter Burghs between 1811 and 1818.1 He succeeded to the title of 2nd Baronet Anstruther, of Fort William, Bengal [G.B., 1798] on 26 January 1811.1 He succeeded to the title of 5th Baronet Anstruther, of Anstruther and of Elie House, co. Fife [N.S., 1700] on 26 January 1811, and from 1817 "of Carmichael and Westraw, co. Lanark."1 On 18 April 1817 he inherited the estates of Carmichael and Westraw, Lanarkshire, on the death of his cousin, Andrew Carmichael, 6th Earl of Hyndford.1 In 1817 his name was legally changed to John Carmichael-Anstruther.
