NOTE:[Ponton.FTW]
2. Adelia (aka. "Delina" ) 20 19 Ponton. Daughter of Jean Baptiste Ponton & Leocadie (aka. Cathrina) Patenaude. Born Nov 1874 in Cohoes, Albany Co., New York, USA19 17 60. Died Before 195349. Occupation dressmaker (1910) 60 ; cotton mill laborer (1920) 56.
1. Date of birth is from 1900 Federal Census data for Rhode Island. Listed as a resident of Pawtucket, RI, on marriage certificate.
2. Date of death is "pre-1953" based on listing of husband George Hamel as a "widower" on his 1953 death certificate. No death certificate found in Pawtucket or Cumberland city archives. The obituary of George Hamel (Pawtucket Times, February 21, 1953) lists him as the husband of the "late Adelia Ponton." Census data shows that Adelia Ponton-Hamel was still alive and living in Pawtucket, separate from her husband, in 1920. (See notes under daughter Adelia Hamel.)
2. Probably baptized Rose-Delima as in Canada only certain names were allowed for parents to name their children according to Catholic doctern at the time.
3. First name listed as "Delina" on marriage certificate on file at Pawtucket City Hall. First name listed as "Adelia" on death certificate of husband George Hamel on file at Cumberlan d Town Hall.
4. According to family lore, Adelia reputedly left or divorced husband George Hamel during the Great Depression. Comparison of 1900 and 1910 Federal Census data for Rhode Island substantiates that she left him, but there was never a divorce. Also, she had left George by 1910, rather than later during the Depression. The two are residing in the same household with their children on Park St. in Pawtucket in 1900. In 1910, however, Adelia and her two surviving children are listed as residing with her mother Cathrine and stepfather Francis Deseau(x) on Japonica St. in Pawtucket.
5. According to the 1910 Federal Census, Adelia Ponton-Hamel had given birth to 4 children, only two of whom still survived during that year.
6. In 1920, was residing with her daughter Adelia Hamel-Camirand at 116 Clark Ave., Pawtucket, RI.
7. Not buried with husband George Hamel at Notre Dame Cemetery in Pawtucket, RI. Whereabouts of grave unknown.19 20 173. According to family lore, George's wife Adelia (aka. Delina) divorced him during the Great Depression. However, the death certificate on file at the Town Hall in Cumberland, RI, shows that he was a widower at the time of his death. It is possible that Adelia left him and died later, with no divorce ever having been decreed. (Cultural note: During this period of time, divorce brought with it excommunication from the Catholic Church. No French Catholic would wish to expose himself to such a stigma at the time in question.)
