Birth, death: Genealogy.com - Queen Victoria, Ancestry of - © 1996-2007 MyFamily.com, Inc. - The only child of Edward Duke of Kent and Victoria Maria Louisa of Saxe-Coburg, Victoria was born on May 24, 1819. In 1837, at the age of 18, Victoria succeeded her uncle, William IV, to the throne and began a reign that would dominate the rest of the century. In 1840, Victoria married her first cousin Albert of Saxe-Coburg Gotha. Together, Victoria and Albert had nine children, four sons and five daughters, many of whom married into European monarchy. After Albert died of typhoid, Victoria remained in mourning for the rest of her life. Among Queen Victoria's great achievements was the implementation of institutional reform and the expansion of the empire. Under Victoria's reign, the British Empire doubled in size, taking in India, Australia, Canada and parts of Africa and the South Pacific.
