Individual Note

Ray was a school teacher and school principal in Payson, Utah. He married Lucile Tilson, his seventeen year old student. He was a banker in Fillmore, Utah for several years. He also sold insurance. He was highly intelligent and well educated. He became both blind and deaf in his later years.

From Lauren Monsen (Feb 2010): I didn't realize that my grandpa Ray had been a smoker! (I think he must have quit by the time I finally met him, though, since I never saw him with a pipe or cigarette.) I knew that my Uncle Erv (Stratton) had been a smoker, but he finally quit, too. As you point out, Marsha, my grandmother and Aunt Shirley must have suffered from second-hand smoke (a danger that no one knew about in those days). I can't help wondering if Erv's smoking contributed to Shirley's heart disease, even though she obviously had a genetic predisposition, anyway. Shirley died at age 63, after suffering two massive heart attacks. It was such a shame that she didn't live long enough to see her grandchildren, Samantha and Zachary (Tom's kids).

From Marsha Woodward: When I would visit Lucile and Ray, he often call me into his little back bedroom to read him the stock report from the newspaper and had me drop medication into each eye.
