Individual Note

"The George W West family moved to the Hightower area of Forsyth County, GA from the Union County/Spartanburg County area of South Carolina about 1853. While the West famliy has long been associated with Hightower Baptist Church, from historical records and gravesites, it seems likely that the family, which consisted of George W., his wife Jennet (Cowen) West, and 6 sons and four daughters attended Concord Baptist Church in Forsyth County at least until the 1890s."
-- The West Family for Hightower History Book, excerpt on the West Family Facebook Genealogy page, 18 June 2015

The Mystery of George W. West’s Parentage

I have yet to find any records linking George W West to specific parents, but I think I’ve found a pretty good candidate for his mother and father:

George West and Edith Colista McHanie. (Mary West’s excellently presented page details the George West genealogy.)

I would like to share what I know of the children of George and Janetta West who moved to Arkansas. As far as I know there were three, Pascal West, Sarah Jane West McClure and George West. Pascal and George and their families moved near Belleville in Yell County, Arkansas. Sarah Jane and her husband lived in Delaware, Arkansas nearby in Logan County. They all came to Arkansas around 1872.

Since Pascal West is my great grandfather, his descendants are the ones I know best. He had 4 children who lived to adulthood. They were Thomas, George, Effie and Altha. Effie and Altha married brothers whose last name was Crownover. Altha died before I was born but I do remember meeting Effie when I was young. I do not know anything about their children or if they had any. George and his wife Annie lived near us and had two children but they did not have children.

Thomas had 4 children. Azzie Lee, Lenton, Lawton and my father Eual Paschal West. Azzlie Lee and Lenton did not have children. Lawton had one son, Kenneth who lives in Oklahoma with his family. My father had 2 sons, Ron and Jim. My brother Jim had a son and daughter. The son lives in Arkansas and has son and daughter. The daughter lives in Texas. I have 3 sons and 7 grandchildren. One son and his family still live in Arkansas as do my wife and I. Many of these descendants are buried in Lower Spring Creek Cemetery near Belleville.

Sarah Jane West McClure and her husband A.H. McClure had at least on son. A doctor named W.Y. McClure. They were evidently a prominent family in the area of Delaware and Dardanelle, Arkansas. A.H. and W.Y are mentioned in posts I have below in the civil war veterans picture and the biography of W.Y. I know nothing about their descendants but know W.Y. had children.

George West moved to Yell County after the others. Recently my brother was in Belleville and asked if anyone remembered him. Belleville only has about 300 people. They remembered him and mentioned he had a son named Jim and Jim had a son named Ronnie who still lived there. We have tried to contact him but not been able to. It is interesting he has the same name as me and only lived 30 miles from where I grew up but I did not know he existed. Interesting fact, Belleville is also the home town of Carol Burnett’s grandmother who helped raise her. Carol Burnett has visited Belleville.

Of the descendants of George West of Forsyth County Georgia who came to Arkansas I know of 8 still living in Arkansas and at least 12 living outside of Arkansas. There may be more.

Three of the children of George West (b 1818) are buried in the Concord Cemetery but we have no record of where George and his wife Jennet are buried. It may be that they are buried there but the record has been lost or the tombstone destroyed.

Another interesting cemetery is Antioch Cemetery in Pickens County, Georgia not far away from Concord. George West (b1779) is listed as a charter member of the church along with his daughter Mary and an Eddy West who I think is his wife Edith nicknamed Eddy. George’s son Merrick and Merrick’s wife are buried there but no record of George and Edith. It seems since George and Edith were charter members they would be buried there.

I also wonder if Edith West Harris, daughter of George (b 1818) is named after her grandmother Edith McHanie West. She is called Eda on her tombstone at Concord.

Orville,

Here is a link to a West genealogy site. You may have seen this. On page 4 I believe our link is to the George West, #45 in generation 4 of the website below. It seems like you said one time your West ancestor was Merrick West or Willis West or one of his sons.

My Great-Great Grandfather was George West, born in 1818 or 1819 in Spartanburg. He moved to Georgia about the same time the George West above and some of his children mover to Georgia. On several of the census records in South Carolina my George West lived in the same area as the children of the George West above. Some of my distance cousins list our George West as a son of the George West but I have no way to confirm that.

I have taken a DNA test in the West DNA project my DNA indicates I am in the Joseph West line along with George West above. If my George is not a son of this George, he is almost certainly a son of one of his brothers or uncles.

The genealogy listed here was prepared by Mary West Rumera. I think she has done a good job.
