Jack DTugman

According to the family, J D was always called by only his initials. The family sources say Jack was not a real name, and they do not know why he was called Jack. But every public record or Directory listing reports him as Jack D Tugman.

Only two early exceptions to this occur, when he was listed as J D in the 1920 and 1930 censuses. All other records have him as Jack D, including his California death record, his WWII registration and his marriage records. I have not seen his birth certificate.

The family name is spelled Tugman in all sources except the 1920 census and a 1952 Bakersfield City Directory, where it is spelled Tugmon. In 1920 J D was in his mother's household where she is working as a divorced mother in Platte County, Wyoming.

By 1930 the family is back in Oklahoma, and J D's mother has remarried to Lawrence Carter.

Jack was already in the army when he registered for the draft in 1945 at age 28. He listed the Army as his employer. His residence was Tulsa, Oklahoma. Jack reported his birth place as Lusk, Wyoming. But he reported his birth date as 19 Apr 1917, two years earlier than other sources have. He reported his wife Mary as next of kin.

In 1940, Jack is in the Army, stationed at Ft Sill, near Lawton, in Comanche County, a couple of counties southwest of Lindsay, where his father was living in 1930.

Jack and Mary's son Donald Ray was born in July 1949 in Wichita County, Texas.

Don's birth was correctly reported in the 1950 census. The 1950 census reported the family was living in Electra, Wichita County at that time. Jack's occupation was reported as Truck Driver. But a 1951 record indicates he was still in the armed forces,

J D and Mary had married in Oklahoma in 1941. From the children's ages and states of birth reported in 1950, we can determine that J D and Mary moved from Oklahoma to Missouri in 1942 oe 1943. They moved from Missouri back to Oklahoma shortly after David's birth, maybe early 1944. In July 1945, J D's draft record shows he was in the army and stationed in Tulsa. So they moved on south to Texas after July 1945 and before Betty's birth in about 1946 or 1947. If we find the children's birth records we can specify more specifically the dates of the moves.

A flight manifest tells us that Jack traveled from Honolulu to Los Angeles in December 1951. The USC (US Code) designation for Jack and others on this commercial flight indicates they were under military assignment. It is possible this is a different Jack Tugman.

J D and Mary moved to Bakersfield, California, for a while. The following listing in Bakersfield, California, is likely for our J D (Jack) Tugman, though the middle initial is A instead of D. Since they are in the 1952 directory, along with his father, and the occupation as driver matches, this is probably the same couple. Note, however, that their son Don Ray, born in 1949, is not listed, since this directory, like most we find, does not list minor children.

No other Tugman or Tugmon is listed in Bakersfield in 1951. This spelling of the family name seems to confirm a conclusion of family researcher Loretta Gregory Gay that the spelling of Tugman was introduced by George's wife and J D's mother Lucy Gregory Tugman, while his father followed the earlier original dominant spelling of the family name as Tugmon. There are other branches of the family that also spell the name as Tugman, including another J D Tugman of Bend, Oregon.

In the 1952 city directory we find them listed under the original spelling of the name Tugmon, and with the correct initial D. His father George Edward is also in the directory as G E Tugmon. J D and Mary moved to Texas in about 1953, but later J D was back in Kern County where he lived the rest of his life.

By 1957 J D was driving for the same company, they were back in Lubbock, where they were first listed in 1951 and are also listed in 1958.

J D went back to California about 1959, or at any rate, before 1960, when he was again listed in the city directory for Bakersfield. He was there in early 1962, when he married Bessie Irene Gann. It is not clear if Mary died or they divorced. I have not found a divorce or death record in either Texas or California. We assume Mary died about 1959.

Jack is the only Tugman or Tugmon listed in Bakersfield in 1960. Note that no wife's name is given here. In this same directory, J D's third wife appears as Flora Davis Maxwell, with no husband, but no designation of her as a widow, which we would expect. This may indicate they were divorced. Jeff Maxwell did not die until 1965, the year before Addie Flora (Flo) married J D. No entry appears for her first husband Jeff Maxwell, but Jeff's brother Clarence A Maxwell is in the directory.

Two listings are found for the marriage of J D to Irene Devault, giving both her maiden name and her first married name of Gann.

A very interesting record turned up, with Jack Tugman at the 1315 Washington Ave address above. Directories continue to report this Jack Tugman at the same address in years after J D's date of death in 1991. Our J D's third wife Flora also died before this date, on 29 June 1984.

Two marriage records also occur for J D's third marriage, to Addie F Maxwell/Davis. Addie's death record informs us that Davis was her maiden name. We also see her middle name, reported as the initial F elsewhere, was Flora, the name she is commonly known by, or its nickname Flo, reported by Loretta Gregory Gay from personal knowledge.
