In 1896, William was enrolled in the Cherokee Nation as an intermarried white, based on his marriage to Mary Raymond, a 1/16 blood Cherokee who had been enrolled in 1800 based on her mother's Cherokee identity and heritage.
Together they went through the process of application with the Dawes Commission and finally were rejected for membership in January 1907. Records hand down to us many, many instances of this sort. There was such corruption and venality in the Dawes proceedings.
