Edward Stewart Elder distinguished himself as a fighter pilot in World War II (including flying the P-38, “Dear John” in North Africa 1942). He was once dubbed Edward “Single Engine” NEWBURY but was mainly known in the service as “Newby”. He was later a Colonel and Director of Operations at Headquarters, Germany - in overt Air Force surveillance activities along the Iron Curtain. He retired 1970. Although Ed originally met his wife-to-be in 1936, their relationship developed in 1944. Ed m: 5 Dec 1944 Washington, Washington County, Kansas to Phoebe Kathleen “Kay” ELLIOT, b: 7 Jun 1921 Porterville, Tulare County, California, d: 17 Jan 2009 Palmer, Matanuska Susitna, Alaska of esophageal cancer, cremated, and ashes scattered in the same area as her husband. Kay lived Palmer, Alaska during 1990-2007, when she furnished input to this author - both on her family and the descendants of Charles Francis Moore NEWBURY Sr. This author remembered Kay as an especially open, gracious, and generous person.
