Individual Note

Johann Peltzer, the fifth child of the fifth generation who became the master of the "Jordan" copper smelting works, was born at Stolberg, November 24, 1641. In 1670 he erected what is called "Front Steinfeld" (das vordere Steinfeld). This became of the most extensive copper mills in that locality, the original "Steinfeld" having been founded in 1597 by the Abbot of Corneliminster, Johann Heinrich von Gerzen, owner. He granted to Johann Peltzer with this plant the water power of the river Vicht and the mill pond called the "Mousbach".

From a statement made public in 1667, on the extent of the manufacture of copper in the valley of Stolberg, it appears that there were sixty-one smelters in operation in that locality alone, of which thirty-one were in the hands of different Peltzers, the rest being operated by other relatives of the family. Johann Peltzer was also largely interested in the needle and pin industry in Ai-la-Chapelle, or Aachen.
