6. 1802-Oct 1811, Roane Co, TN: "Pasons Upshaw" signed a road petition; M. H. Thornton, "Pioneers of Roane County, 1801-1830", page 35.

7. 1814, 16 Sep: Passons(sic) Upshaw was grantee of a Tennessee land grant, as assignee of John C. McLimore and Richard Brittain, by survey, dated 16 Sep 1814. Grant No. 7779. 35 acres in Dickson County, First District, on waters of Yellow Creek, "including Lambert's inprovement", granted 28 Sep 1815. Recorded in Book L, page 128. (Source: "Tennessee General Grants", card file in the Tennessee State Archives). Note: Dickson county adjoins Montgomery County on the south (Note: an original copy of this grant is needed to see if it states the residence of Parson when the grant was issued).

8. 1820 census, Montgomery Co, TN, page 19: "Parson Upshaw" household: 2 males under 10, 2 females under 10, 2 males 10-16 (James & John?), 1 female 10-16, 1 male 16-26 (George W.), 1 female 16-26 (Amelia?), 1 male over 45 (Parson), 1 female 26-45 (wife of Parson).

11. 1830 census: Parson Upshaw not found, nor in any later record; assumed dead. (Note: the Jackson county, IL, courthouse at Brownsville was burned in January 1843 and only two books were saved - the County Clerk's records from 1823 which have been published by the Jackson County Histrorical Society; we have copies of all Upshaw references-TOB).

COMMENTS:

1. Parson Upshaw is documented to have lived in Elbert Co, GA, before 1802; Roane Co, TN, before October 1811; Dickson Co, TN, in 1815 (perhaps); Montgomery Co, TN, in 1820, adjacent to his brother-in-law, George Greenwood, husband of Martha Upshaw; Gallatin Co, IL, in 1826; Jackson Co, IL, in 1828; no later record.

2. It is suspected that Parson Upshaw was the father of Mary ("Polly") Upshaw, born ca 1798, in GA, who married Ezekiel Starr in Feb. 1820, Blount Co, TN. Parson was in the 1820 census of Williamson Co, TN, which is about 100 miles away from Blount Co. We have no evidence that Parson was in Blount County at any time, although we do know he was in nearby Roane County earlier, in 1811; see notes above. More evidence is needed.

3. Attempting to identify his unknown children, as enumerated in the 1820 Montgomery Co, TN, census, the following three early Upshaw marriages are noted in IL: Nancy Upshaw & Daniel Akers, 21 Jun 1845, Crawford Co; Singleton Upshaw & Amelia Jane Barnett, 4 Apr 1856, Jackson Co; Miss Fredonia C. Upshaw & John E. Glen, 7 Jun 1849, Jackson Co. Research is needed on Nancy (Upshaw) Akers - is she found in the 1850 census, etc? What about Singleton Upshaw-was he in the Civil War & did he apply for a pension? If John E. Glen was in Civil War, did Fredonia (Upshaw) Glen outlive him & apply for a widow's pension?

4. Concerning the name "Parson" or "Parsons", which seems to be a surname; Other "Parsons" connections in Amherst Co, VA, are Sally Parsons, who left a nuncupative will in 1802 (Will Book 4, page 33); there is also mention of a "Sarah Parsons" in the will of Edward Cox, 1780 (Will Book 1, page 533). There is no known Upshaw-Parsons connection that I am aware of.
