1. 1802, 20 Aug: Birth date from the Edwin Upshaw family record kept by Lucy (Roane) Upshaw (see Upshaw Family Journal, Vol. 4 (1977) page 56): "The following entries were faithfully copied by Alice Upshaw Blake from an old memorandum book kept by her grandmother, Lucy Roane Upshaw": George Augustus Upshaw was born August 20, 1802. (note: Upshaw family researcher Grace E. Jared believed this was actually her ancestor "George W. Upshaw", although this theory is not supported by primary evidence).

2. 1810 census, King & Queen Co., VA, page 227: Edwin Upshaw household: 1 male under 10

3. 1820 census, King & Queen Co., VA, page 22: Edwin Upshaw household: 1 male 16-25

4. 1830 census, King & Queen Co., VA, page 277: Edwin Upshaw household: 1 male 20-30

5. 1836, St. Charles Co., MO, Land Tax: George A. Upshaw, 240 acres, original owner Richard Taylor. (source: "Missouri Pioneers" (periodical), Vol. 28, page 25).

6. 1840 census: (George A. Upshaw should have been in MO, but not found in 1840 census index there; was he perhaps with one of his brothers?)

7. 1840, 4 July: Polk Co, MO, marriage record to Mary Ann Slagle.

8. 1848, 14 Oct: Mexican War discharge paper of George A. Upshaw:
"Said George A. Upshaw was born in Essex County in the state of Virginia, is forty one(sic) years of age, five feet one inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes, grey hair, and by occupation, when enlisted, a farmer; given at Independence, Mo, this 14 October 1848". The military service record is quite interesting, including the note "loss of horse, gave out for want of forage"; also shows he enlisted at Greenfield, MO.

9. 1849, 21 Dec: Bounty land application of George A. Upshaw, for 160 acres.
(Note: it is unclear where this land was located or even whether it was granted; perhaps research in Missouri land records might reveal this).

10. 1850 census, Dade Co, MO, Dist. 25, enumerated 28 Oct 1850; page 307b, dwelling #651, family #662: George Upshaw, 55, b VA (farmer, no real estate); Mary Upshaw, age 36, b KY; Sarah Upshaw, age 5(6?), b MO; George Upshaw, age 4/12, b MO.

11. 1857, 25 May: Letter from G. A. Upshaw, Ballard Co., KY, to "wife"; (annotated transcript printed in the Upshaw Family Journal, Vol 7 (1980) page 71-74). The situations discussed and the people named in this letter conclusively prove that George Augustus Upshaw was a son of Edwin Upshaw, not George W. Upshaw.

12. 1853-1861:Coryell Co, TX, Land Grant papers, Texas General Land Office: three items for G.A. Upshaw, showing he received 320 acres in Coryell Co, Texas, on 20 Oct 1853. (unpublished papers in T.O. Brooke file).

13. 1860 census, Bell Co., Texas, Belton P.O., page 310, dwelling #213, family #213: G.A. Upshur(sic), age 60, b Virginia (stockraiser, $720 Real estate, $1146 personal estate); Mary Upshur, age 45, b Kentucky; George Upshur, age 10, b Missouri (attended school within the year); Saraly(sic) Upshur, age 15, b Missouri (attended school within the year).

14. 1870 census, Erath Co, TX, Stephensville, P.O. Paloxy Creek; enumerated 27 July 1870, page 473, dwelling #244, family #261: Geo. A. Upshaw, age 76, b VA (farmer, $200 real estate, $8000 personal estate); Mary Upshaw, age 54, b MO. (keeping house); George Upshaw, age 19, b MO.

15. 1879, 18 Feb: deathdate from tombstone, Valley Grove Cemetery, near Armstrong, Erath Co, Texas (note: what is source of this record?).

COMMENTS:

1. George Augustus Upshaw served in the Mexican War, 3rd Missouri Mounted Volunteers.

2. Physical description (from Military Service File): 5 ft, 1 in. tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, grey hair.
