8. 1944, 29 June: The Carroll County Times, page 1: (Note: there was no Carroll County Georgian published in 1944): J. Adkin Upshaw, Prominent Citizen, died early Saturday.
Mr. J. Adkin Upshaw, one of the most respected citizens of Carroll County, was taken by death early Saturday morning June 24th in his 67th year, in an Atlanta hospital. Mr. Upshaw, son of the late Robert V. Upshaw and Ida Pope Routon, was born in Goodwater, Alabama August 24th 1877. With his parents he moved to Carroll County as a young boy. With a friend, Joe A. McMichael, he formed his first business venture in Coweta County. Upon reaching his majority he volunteered his service to his Country He served as a Corporal of Co. A, 29th Regiment of infantry, United States Volunteers in the Phillipine Islands during the Spanish American War. He was wounded in action near Bosc, Marinduque, P.I., and was awarded the Purple Heart. Upon being mustered out of service he returned to Carroll County and became a successful farmer and for the past thirty years he conducted cotton and fertilizer business in Carrollton and gained for himself a host of friends throughout the County.
On May 4th, 1902, he was married to the former Miss Mary Almeida Jordan, to this union were born two sons, both of whom are now in the Armed Services. Mr. Upshaw joined the Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church and later moved his membership to the Tabernackle Baptist Church.He was prominent in Masonic circles, being Past Master of the Blue Lodge and member of the Yaarab Temple of the Shrine. He was always civic minded wherever he lived taking an active part in the government of his community having served as member of the City Council for about eight years and was a valued member of the Lions Club.
Funeral services were conducted from the Tabernackle Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon, June 27th, at 4:00 o'clock. Rev. E.G. Kilpatrick officiating. The following served as pallbearers: Hubert Griffin, G.T. Spence, O.L. Spence, Grady Muse, Sam Long, C.B. Jones, Grady Robinson, and Tom Lawler. The Masonic Lodge and Lion's Club formed an honorary escort. Interment was in the City Cemetery.
Mr. Upshaw, besides his widow, is survived by son, Lt. Haskell O. Upshaw, Riddle Field, Fla., and Luna, Las Vegas, New Mexico; Pfc. Harvey V. Upshaw, Camp sisters (sic), Mrs. J.R. Brooke and Mrs. Ida Todd both of Atlanta. (note: part of sentence structure incorrect).
Among the out-of-town relatives and friends attending were: Mr. and Mrs. B.L. Garrett, Miss Frances Garrett, Mrs. C.G. Lanier and Mr. C.L. Towns, of Roopville; Mr. W.L. Baughcum, Mrs. Bob Greenaway, Mrs. Mary Sams, Mr. Eugene Brooke, Misses Gwendolyn, Mayne, Dorothy, and Faye Todd, Mrs. J.J. Bush, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Morgan, Mr. Marc M. Mandot, Dr. and Mrs. M.K. Sapp, Mr. Paul Lewis, Miss Ethel Smith, Mrs. L.N. Thompson, all of Atlanta; Mr. and Mrs. Ray U. Todd, Cedartown, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Jordan, Greenville, S.C., Mr. Theo R. Brooke, U.S. Navy, Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Almon, Franklin; Mr. and Mrs. E.G. Jordan, Bremen and Mr. McMichael, Newnan.
