COMMENTS:

1. "A Reminiscent History of the Ozark Region" states that Leroy Upshaw was killed by ambush in 1876 while he was tying his horse, in Rockbridge, Missouri, where he had gone to mill. The assailant's name was said to be well known, but as in other cases of that period, enforcement of the law was not always administered to guilty ones involved, so nothing was done about this case".

2. Buried at home place on Brush Creek, Douglas Co, MO.

3. (provided by Mr. Jim R. Souder, 1989): Leroy "Lee" Upshaw was killed in 1856 at old Rockbridge settlement on Bryant Creek, which was the county seat of Douglas county but was destroyed during the War Between the States. The present village of Rockbridge is located on Spring Creek where the mill was built in 1868. Leroy was reputedly hired killed by William N. Alsup, who then married his widow, Lydia Collins (not Parsons) Upshaw in the winter of 1858, which is verified by an affadavit completed by William's brother Moses Lock Alsup for William's widow who was filing for a pension on William's Civil War service.
