If you descend from Michel DUPUIS and Marie GAUTEROT, you and your family could be susceptible to a little-known condition called malignant hyperthermia. It is not termed malignant because it is a cancer, but because it os [sic for is] so swift and deadly... Following is an article that was contained in the Detroit Free Press in 1978, by-lined by Dolly Katz. This disease is one of 40 covered by the MDA research program. ... A chart was shown with the article, illustrating which members were afflicted and how severely. ... Occasionally, perhaps, someone died unexpectedly after strenuous exercise. There might have been one or two unusual drownings. And, if someone had looked closely, he might have seen an increased incidence of hernias, minor muscle problems, clubfoot and double-jointedness in the family... Then, in the mid-1950's, people in the family began to die unexpectely [sic]. [Nine specific instances are cited of deaths during surgery or anesthesia.] All these family members were victims of malignant hyperthermia. Each inherited the disease from a parent, and their children at conception had a 50-50 chance of inheriting it. The genetic defect they share alters the way their muscles use calcium. For the most part, this defect is benign; some carriers never suffer from it. But the administration of the most commonly used anesthetics triggers catastrophic chemical changes that make the patient's temperature soar, often to 110 degrees or higher, and causes massive damage to the heart, liver, brain and other major organs. In short, anesthesia - one of medicine's greatest lifesaving tools - was, for some members of the DUPUIS family, a killer. In addition to French Canadians, the disease is prevalent among families of central European, Italian, Norwegian and Welsh descent. It is rare among blacks and unusually common among Japanese. In the general population, it is roughly estimated that one in 15,000 people carry the hidden disease. Every time a muscle fiber contracts, it uses up a small amount of energy and produces a small amount of heat. But people with malignant hyperthermia have a leak in this system. Their muscles constantly secrete small amounts of calcium. Thus, their muscles are always contracting slightly, always working overtime. The problem is that many anesthetics and muscle relaxants, including the commonly used halothane and succinycholine, have a very light tendency to increase the release of calcium from the muscles. In normal people, this slight increase is unimportant. But in people with malignant hyperthermia, the anesthetics multiply the muscles' natural calcium leak. The result is a massive release of calcium from the muscles - 3,000 the normal amount. This calcium flood makes muscles contract into rigor mortis-like rigidity, which in turns produces overwhelming amounts of heat that the body cannot dissipate. At the same time, the excess calcium disrupts the delicate chemical balances within the body that are necessary for the proper functioning of brain, heart, kidneys and other major organs. In effect, virtually all the body's vital functions collapse within minutes. To treat it, doctors now use drugs to shut down the calcium release and to correct the chemical imbalances. To bring down the temperature, they immerse the patient in ice or ice water, and administer cold intravenous solutions. How successful these efforts are depends on how early the reaction is detected. All patients who have been anesthetized less that 10 minutes have survived; most of those who have been under anesthesia more than an hour have died. Malignant hyperthermia does not preclude surgery. There are many anesthetic agents, including narcotics, morphine, barbiturates, nitrous oxide, demerol, and certain tranquilizers, that don't produce a hyperthermic reaction. The problem, of course, is to know when the patient has malignant hyperthermia so these anesthetics can be substituted. !EDUCATION: Elementary: Saint Cecilia [Catholic] School on Normandy, in Los Angeles, grades K-6.
Junior High: James A. Foshay, off Vermont in Los Angeles, grades 7, 8 & 9.
High School: Manual Arts High School, grades 10-12; graduated winter 1932. (He did not know fellow student Leanore LANE who graduated in summer 1933, after him).
Then he went directly to UCLA in winter 1932, graduating in winter 1936/37, when he moved to Kansas City to work as chemist for his aunt Myrtle CAHILL HAVER's firm. He did some graduate work in Chemistry, but did not pass the German language course requirement.

RESIDENCES: After marriage, he and his new wife lived in a duplex owned by his parents, on 59th Street in SW Los Angeles. Soon after, they began to plan and build a new house, which was finished about 8 months before they brought their second-born to live there, at 7602 East Second Street in Downey, CA.They lived there until the move to a 475-acre apple ranch at 1101 Bear Valley Road in Aptos, CA in spring 1958 (AP #105-151-05).

MILITARY: According to his widow Leanore Lane Theriot Hooper, he had been in ROTC, both in High School, and as a Captain at U.C.L.A. During the early part of World War II he had worked in a military-support draft-exempt job at Vultee Corporation, where he helped cut out airplane parts. At the time he was a college graduate, married, with children. By 1943 he was going to be drafted into the Army, and in three months he would have been qualified, and possibly sent overseas. So he took the Eddy test, to get into radio, and passed with the top marks, so the Navy accepted him as an enlisted man. He was sent to San Diego for training, but never actually served aboard ship.

DEATH: Had operations for thyroid cancer in Oct & Dec 1955, and Feb 1956. Died of cancer twenty years later, at home at 1101 Bear Valley Road, Aptos, CA, attended by wife Lee and daughter Karen Theriot READER.

BURIAL: Cremated, ashes spread above spring at home ranch, at 1101 Bear Valley Road, Aptos, CA 95003 by his son Michael.
