Came to Australia as an 18 year old on the "Duke of Devonshire" which left Plymouth, England 5th February, 1883 arriving Cooktown 2nd April 1883 with his brother Christian Emil age 24, Christian's wife Nicoline Elizabeth age 28 and their children Fred age 4 and Neil an infant who died on the voyage. The family disembarked in Brisbane. Christian and Elizabeth settled on the Darling Downs. Christian died 24 July 1929 age 72 and is buried in Yangan Cemetery (near Warwick). Elizabeth died 10 July 1904 and is also buried in Yangan Cemetery. They had 6 more children born in Queensland - 1884 Maria Elizabeth, 1886 Peter Christian, 1887 Anna Alexandra, 1889 Elizabeth Andrea, 1891 Emily Christina, 1900 Emma Wilhelmine Fomsgaard. Carl Alexander remained in Brisbane until early October 1889 when he sailed to Melboure arriving 30 October, 1889. (see Letters of Naturalisation). At the time he left Brisbane Cecilia Marianne Quayle was about 5 months pregnant. His name does not appear on the birth record for his son. Carl and Marianne would have both been around 24/25 years old at the time. It would seem Carl abandoned Marianne. Whilst Marianne has not recorded Carl as the father of her child she has chosen to name the son after the father. I find this a little hard to understand unless she thought Carl might return. When Cecilia married John Smith in Ipswich 2 June 1891she was described as being a spinster. Family story from Cecilia's descendants is that Carl Alexander died on a building site accident sometime before the birth of son, probably about 1889. I think this was Cecilia's way of explaining away the disappearance of Carl. Funeral Notice - Bertelsen - on the 9th February, at his residence, Bendigo Hotel, johnston Stteet, Collingwood, Carl Alexander, husband of the late Elsa Bertelsen, and loving father of anna (Mrs W hay) and lillian (Mrs R Fitzgerald), loving grandfather of Valarie, Shirley and Charles Hay, and Elsa and Elaine Fitzgerald, aged 3 years. (The Argus, Melbourne Monday 11 February, 1929).
