The data in this database are mainly gathered from the registers
of the Lutheran church in Zaandam, Holland. To wit: baptisms
1642-1812 and marriages 1643-1820. Although most entries in these
books have been incorporated in this database, some have been left
out, mainly when individual people could not be matched with other
people / families in the database. This applies to only a handful
of entries. In some cases data from other sources have been
added. This database is by no means limitative. Should you have any
questions, please send me an email (click on the profile link to
the left). Zaandam is a village immediately north of Amsterdam. The
Zaandam Lutheran congregation was founded in the 17th century by
lutherans from Scandinavia and Germany. Members of the Lutheran
church lived in Zaandam itself, but also in neighbouring villages
like Koog aan de Zaan, Zaandijk, Wormerveer, Krommenie, Westzaan
and Oostzaan. Until 1812, Zaandam was divided in Oostzaandam (east
of the river Zaan) and Westzaandam (west of the river). The
lutheran church was and indeed still is in Westzaandam.
