Individual Note

Gilbert McMicken, politician, magistrate (b at Wigstonshire, Scot 1813; d at Winnipeg 6 Mar 1891). He arrived in Canada in 1832, going into business at Chippawa, UC. From 1857 to 1861 he represented Welland in the legislative assembly. Appointed stipendiary magistrate for Canada West in 1864, he led a detective force which prevented Confederate agents from using Canada as a military base. The spy network he established served him again in the mid-1860s when as chief commissioner of Dominion Police, he kept the radical FENIAN movement under close observation, greatly diminishing its threat to Canada. In 1871 McMicken was appointed Dominion Lands agent for Manitoba, assistant receiver general and auditor and manager of the Dominion Savings Bank. From 1874 to 1877 he was an inspector of the Manitoba penitentiary. In 1879 he was elected to represent Cartier in the Manitoba legislative assembly and became speaker the following year. He retired in 1883.
