Individual Note

With the beginning of the Scottish Reformation he became a staunch Covenanter and rebuilt the family chapel at Barhill, co. Ayr, Gilbert purchased Miltonise from John Macilwain, eldest son from his wife's first marriage. He was the first to be persecuted in Scotland by Claverhouse, and when the later did not find him at home, he stole three horses and other property. Gilbert, like other Covenanters, refused to pay the fine, and he forfeited his lands between 1681 and 1688 and was under a sentence of death, but his sentence was recalled and his lands restored to him by Act of Parliament during the reign of William and Mary in 1690.
