1914 May 29th. Atlantic Ocean: in dense fog and darkness the 3,500 ton Norwegian collier "Storstad", loaded with 10,000 tons of coal, rammed the Canadian 14,000 ton passenger ship "Empress of Ireland" portside and gouged a 25 foot hole into the vessel which sank within less than 30 minutes; at least 1,012 people died (840 passengers, 172 crew) There were over 1,014 bodies entombed inside the wreck, 134 of these bodies were children most of which were never recovered from this tragedy.
