description d'une malle "au depart"
From the heart of Paris, Au Depart was a very old provider of high quality trunks and leather travel accessories competing directly with Goyard, Vuitton, and Moynat who was located just down the street. Their shop was at 29 Avenue De L'Opera close to the Paris Opera and situated alongside the finest retailers and specialty shops in France. Like Moynat, they unfortunately vanished without a
trace following WWII.
This vintage trunk measures 43.5"L X 19.5"H and 21"W and is in the style and quality of Vuitton and Goyard trunks of 1920. It is very solid, has a great shape, and displays quite nicely. The outer covering is intact and worn gracefully. There is no decay, weakness, rips or missing sections. It has taken on a beautiful brown color much warmer than shown under the bright sun as pictured. The slats are solid with their character intact. The slats are adorned with brass nails which are original
and despite the photo's, are brass. The slat clamps are brass and quite numerous as well.
The locks are complete with 2 keys. They are engraved "Au Depart 29 Avenue De L'Opera Paris France" and "150" around the key hole with "Depose'" on the upper lock sections.
The latches are unique, work great, and engraved with what appear to be a lion heads.
The 2 red stripes around the trunk are called the "bande d'ecurie" and were painted on trunks of a family to assist in identifying and
keeping their belongings together at the busy hotel or train station. A previous owners name and initials are present on the trunk. The bottom is as good as the top with a continuation of the same covering.
The wood slats run length ways and also the other direction at the ends as often seen on trunks of France. The hinges are solid and remain hidden as originally covered.
There are two "Au Depart" tags. One at each end. They read Articles De Voyage
ET D'Automobile AU DEPART (address, etc. )
