The Evening News NEW GLASGOW NOVA SCOTIA Thursday April 14 1965 John A Munroe Mark Golden Anniversary NEW GLASGOW- Mr and Mrs John A Munroe, Westville Road, were at Home to a large number of friends and relatives on Tuesday afternoon and evening April 12 on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary. Mr Munroe, son of the late Mr and Mrs J.J. Munroe Marshy Hope Pictou Co. and his wife the former Salome Lodge daughter of the late Capt, and Mrs George Lodge of Port Union Nfld. Were married on April 8 1916 in the Evangelical Church Cambridge Mass. The bride of 50 years had as her bridesmaid Elizabeth Russell and the best man was Fred Burdges. After their marriage the Munroe's lived for several years in Cambridge Mass. They then returned to Pictou County where Mr Munroe a carpenter by trade built a home on the East River Road and they lived there for 16 years. When the depression came in the early 20s, Mr and Mrs Munroe went to Somerville Mass. Remaining there for 12 years, after which they again came home sold their home on East River Road and built the home on Westville Road. They spent 15 years during the past years in Hamilton Ontario, before coming home three years ago to remain in the county. Active in the Community Mr and Mrs Munroe are active members of the church of the Nazarene and take an active part in all community endeavours. The couple have two daughters Dorothy (Mrs Thomas Smith) and Ruth Mrs George Brydon) Hamilton Ontario. A son Sinclair in Halifax, and six grandchildren. Baskets of red and yellow chrysanthemums and bouquets of multi-coloured flowers. Received from the couples son in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs Thomas Smith; their grandson and his wife, Mr and Mrs Carl Cameron and baby, of Hamilton Ontario; pieces, Miss Hilda Haggart. Mrs Norma Hamm and Mrs Don Barber and Mr Barber Scarborough Ontario, and Mrs Robert MacGillivary, Albert ST. and Bill Morton and family East River Road, decorated the rooms. The guests were greeted by Mrs Isabel MacDonald a neighbour and close friend of the family. Rev. Mr Huff and Mrs. Huff the minister of the church of the Nazarene, were among the many who called during the day and offered congratulations and good wishes. The Bride of 50 years ago received her guests in a black dress and a corsage of yellow roses tied with gold ribbon. The groom wore a gold boutonniere. The tea table was covered with an ecru lace hand-made cloth, centered with a three tiered wedding cake topped with 50 years inscribed in gold letters. Gold and white candles in silver candelabra flaked the cake. Bouquets of red roses completed the setting. Serving Guests Presiding at the silver service was Mrs R.W. Haggart sister of the groom. Serving the guests were Mrs Dorothy Munroe and there daughter, Mrs George Brydon. Mrs D.W. Munroe and Mrs James Munroe, sister-in-laws of the groom, had charge of other arrangements. The bride and groom cut and passed out their cake to the guests. David Brydon, Hamilton Ontario grandson of the jubilarians, had charge of the guest book. Numerous cards, telegrams, monetary and other gifts were received by the happy couple, including a telephone call from their son-in-law and daughter Mrs Thomas Smith, Hamilton Ontario. Who were unable to be home for the occasion. The best wishes of all were extended to Mr. And Mrs. Munroe for many more years of good health and happiness together.
