Since 1986, I have spent quite a bit of time building my traditional genealogy to finally come up with four puzzles. In 2018, entering the field of genetic genealogy has opened up new perspectives for me to solve my puzzles, but with the discovery of new questions:
- Who is the common ancestor that links me to my American and Canadian cousins?
- Who is the common ancestor that links me to the Basque country, to Spain, to Cuba, to Mexico?
- Who is the common ancestor that links me to the North-East of France, to Belgium, to Holland?
- Who is the common ancestor that links me to Finland, Scandinavia, Russia and East Prussia?
Here is the challenge of the next few years: to discover what is hidden in my real family tree, knowing that the one built all year long by the traditional declarative genealogy is globally false.

On my paternal branch, my family tree contains four identified enigmas, there are probably many others unknown because they are too far away in time, not to mention unknown adulterers.

1 - 1799 Jack TOBIE, Abandoned child in Bordeaux. Among a list of 26 children rounded up in the streets of Bordeaux, all of them have names and surnames or only first names on this list, which is quite unusual for abandoned children because they have not been transcribed individually in a birth certificate. Jacques transmitted his Y chromosome to us from fathers to sons whose Haplogroup is R1b-CTS4188 which is Celtiberian from Galicia and the Basque Country, hence our many cousins whose surnames are Basque or Hispanic, Etcheverry, Esquivel, Lalanne, Alsua, Deschamps, Cors de la Fuente, Salas, Porras, Garcia, Gomez, Gonzalez, Rodriguez, Perez, Sanchez, etc...
I have not yet been able to find MRCA on all of my genetic cousins, I am waiting for the result of my Big-Y 700 test from FamilyTreeDNA which I hope will finally allow me to find Jacques' ancestry.

2 - 1801 Henry Chenquin, Abandoned child in Bordeaux. His cradle contained a handwritten bill and a green ribbon bordered with white. It was written that his name was Henry Chenquin, that he had been baptized and registered. By cross-checking my other hypotheses and my genetic cousins, it turns out that his mother was a daughter of the Pedigo family from Henry County, Virginia. My MRCA is composed of the couple of Robert Henry PEDIGO 1727..1728-1822 and Mary Phoebe ELKINS 1740-1823. The mother's hypothesis is based on 100% British & Irish X chromosome transmission. The father still escapes me, but he was probably Irish considering my many cousins from Antrim and Tipperary, moreover a family tradition says that we are Irish, so this is a serious hypothesis.

3 - 1828 Mark Anien, abandoned child in Bordeaux.The composition of his name reflects his abandonment, indeed in the martyrology of the Christian Saints, Saint Mark precedes Saint Anien, hence the composition of the name by the religious of the Hospice, of the Manufacture of Bordeaux. Given his many cousins in Louisiana and Canada, his parents were Duhon and Pelletier families from Louisiana. My MRCA are for the moment the couple of François Marie DUHON 1771-1846 and Marie Marguerite BOURGEOIS 1775, as well as the couple of Jean Baptiste PELLETIER 1783-1844 and Marie Thècle MORIN 1792-1830.

4 - 1854 Andrew Chanquin, Born of unknown father in Braud and Saint Louis along the Gironde river after Bordeaux. History repeats itself because he is the grandson of Henry Chenquin, enigma n°2 of American origin. Indeed after cross-referencing with my many genetic cousins, it turns out that Andrew's father is none other than an American planter named Bridger Jones 1814-1894 from Bulloch County, Georgia. My MRCA consists of the couple of William WISE 1744-1816 and Sarah Margaret DENMARK ca 1757-ca 1821. It remains to be seen what Bridger came to Bordeaux during the Crimean War, probably from the cotton trade.

If the genealogical study already allowed spectacular progress for the knowledge of our ancestors while leaving a doubt on the real paternity of the persons, the contribution of genetics and without context an important upheaval for the resolution of the genealogical enigmas and what is impressive with genetics is that it is unstoppable.
