Fred P. Marty, 51, Cedar Rapids, Ia., Dies After Illness Monticello Native Called By Death After Long Siege of Sickness
Funeral services for Fred P. Marty, aged 51, Cedar Rapids, Ia, a native of Monticello, who died in his home there last Wednesday following a long illness, were conducted here at 1:30 p. m. Sunday in the F. W. Voegeli funeral home and at 2 in the Reformed church.
Rev. A. Muehlmeier, pastor of the church, presided at the services which were followed by interment in Highland cemetery. Pallbearers were Werner, Conrad, and Fred Stauffacher, J. M. Freitag, Dick L. Zentner, and O. E. Zentner, all cousins of the deceased.
A native of this village, Fred P. Marty was born here May 20, 1884, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Paul Marty. He was united in marriage to Miss Louise Taft in Monticello Nov. 12, 1905.
For a number of years, Mr. Marty was successfully engaged in the hardware business in Monticello, disposing of his interests to Joe J. Voegeli, who still conducts the business in the same building. With John J. Voegeli, Mr. Marty formed a partnership which organized the Monticello Auto company which they built up into one of the most successful businesses of its kind in the state. At one time, they held the franchise for Buick and Oakland automobiles in several southern Wisconsin counties.
The marked success of the Monticello company under their direction led the newly organized Nash Motors Company of Kenosha to offer the Monticelloans a large block of Iowa counties for the sale of Nash automobiles and Messrs. Marty and Voegeli left Monticello in 1919 to enter business in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. For many years, they enjoyed an unusually flourishing business, selling as high as several hundred cars annually, until the inception of the depression which greatly hindered the industry generally. The. partnership was dissolved about four years ago.
Mr. Marty developed a talent for music at an early age and was a cornetist of exceptional ability. At the age of about 15 he took a special course of several weeks on the cornet at the Dana Musical institute, Warren, Ohio, and for several years thereafter officiated as director of the Monticello Messenger Boy band, one of the very few juvenile organizations in the state at that time. He also played for some years with the Geo. L. Hatch Harp orchestra, of Janesville, which in those years was recognized as one of the leading dance orchestras in southern Wisconsin,
Survivors are the widow; one daughter, Miss Zona, one son, Herman Marty, all of Cedar Rapids, and one brother, Dick Marty, who recently moved with his family to Los Angeles, Calif. His parents and a daughter, Lorna, who died in early girlhood, preceded him in death.
