Mudgee Guardian 9/12/1943 The death of Mr Peter Lynch occurred at Gulgong at the weekend. Thedistrict lost one of its very oldest residents. Well over the 90* year mark he was smart and active almost till the last. He came from a particularly long lived family. All his brothers living to a great age. *Peter was in fact 88yrs when he died. ( I've noticed the Mudgee Guardian Journalist was not good at sums. (Sgd. Dennis Lynch) Mudgee Mail? 9/12/1943 (Thurs.) DEATH MR.P.M.LYNCH. - The death took place in Gulgong Hospital on Friday night last of Peter Matthew LYNCH, a very old and respected resident of Home Rule and Cooyal district. the deceased who had attained the great age of 91* years, had only been ailing for a few days and his end was quite unexpected. He had spent the whole of his life around Home Rule, Cooyal and Botobolar, and was for 12 years* licensee of the Cooyal Hotel. As a young man he married Miss Babbage, another well known district family. The following sons and daughters are left to mourn the loss of a good .father, viz. Frederick(Sydney), Leslie (Sydney), Reuben (AIF), Mrs.Gaffney and Mrs. Kettley (Sydney). The remains were laid to rest in the Roman Catholic portion of Gulgong cemetery on Sunday afternoon, the Rev.Fr.Foley officiated. (plot 37b) I would have liked to know my great uncle Peter, I have heard some stories from my relatives who knew him and he sounded like a nice man. My father, Sam related this story to my mother:- After Peter took up residence in his shack at Home Rule, my father Sam spent a short time there with him. They were both early risers and one morning just before sunup, Sam looked outside and was astonished to see Peter surrounded by animals and birds which he was feeding. When Sam stepped outside the wildlife disappeared. Another interesting story was as follows:- Peter had anUMBER mine, according to my mother a substance used back then in the paint industry as tint. Other relatives say it was a chalk mine. anyway evidently Peter would mine the substance and send it to his customer in Sydney. Each month Peter would go to Sydney to collect his cheque for this substance and see his family who by now were mostly all there, including his wife Mary who refused to live at Home Rule. Peter had a dog called Ringy and he was rarely separated from Peter, everybody knew when Peter was coming back from his Sydney trip because Ringy would be at the railway station to meet him on the day he returned. It had people stumped how the dog knew when Peter was coming home. Peter was also known to like a drink and the story goes that after a convivial nights libation in town with friends and completely blotto, his mates would put him in the sulky and Ringy and the horse would bring Peter home where he would sleep in the sulky until the cold got to him or morning came, whichever. A sad ending was that when Peter was buried Ringy died on his grave. • Individual: 1880 United States Federal Census - MyHeritage
The 1880 census contains records of families living in the United States and its territories during the latter half of the Great Westward Migration. Thirty-eight states were included in the 1880 census, plus the territories of: Arizona, Dakota, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. Non-organized Alaska was also enumerated, but the "Indian Territory" (now Oklahoma) was not enumerated for non-Indians.

Federal census takers were asked to record information about every person who was in each household on the census day. A census taker might have visited a house on a later date, but the information he collected was supposed to be about the people who were in the house on the census day. The basic census enumeration unit was the county. Each county was divided into enumeration districts, one for each enumerator. The completed forms were sent to the Commerce Department's Census Office in Washington, D.C.

Federal censuses are usually reliable, depending on the knowledge of the informant and the care of the census enumerator. Information may have been given to a census taker by any member of the family or by a neighbor. Some information may have been incorrect or deliberately falsified. - 10129 - Collection - https://www.myheritage.com/research/record-10129-60346688/peter-lynch-in-1880-united-states-federal-census - https://www.myheritage.com/research/record-10129-60346688/peter-lynch-in-1880-united-states-federal-census - 2 APR 2019 - Peter Lynch
