Individual Note

NOTE: JOHN WAS A LAY MINISTER IN THE BAPTIST CHURCH IN ROCKINGHAM, VA. WHEN SARAH WAS A YOUNG GIRL OF ABOUT NINE YEARS, JOHN DECIDED TO MOVE TO THE TENNESSEE FRONTIER. ACCORDING TO AN ACCOUNT WRITTEN BY SUSAN BURROUGHS AS A CHILD WHILE AT GRINNELL, IOWA AND SHORTLY BEFORE THE DEATH OF HER MOTHER PRISCILLA IN 1916, WE LEARN THAT JOHN TOOK HIS LITTLE NINE YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WITH HIM TO TENNESSEE TO BE HIS HOUSEKEEPER AND HELP HIM SET UP A HOME FOR THE REST OF THE FAMILY WHO WERE TO COME LATER. PRISCILLA DICTATED TO SUSAN THE ACCOUNT, PART OF WHICH FOLLOWS."SHE (MEANING SARAH) SPENT MANY LONELY DAYS BEFORE THE OTHER CHILDREN ARRIVED. HER FATHER WAS A BAPTIST MINISTER AND PREACHED THERE IN THE SAME CHURCH FOR FORTY YEARS. HER MOTHER WAS A METHODIST AND HELD FIRMLY TO HER OWN BELIEFS."
