    "In 1665 he was licensed to trade in Albany. He was a member of the Reformed Dutch Church of Brooklyn in 1677 and 1685. He resided at Brooklyn Ferry. He was a commissioner of Brooklyn, 1690, by act of Court of General Sessions, of which he was at that time a grand juryman."

      S.R. Durand:
      "Jan Gerretse van Couwenhoven, number (402) on chart #5 and number (780) on chart #4, was born at Flatlands on Long Island in 1639. He married Geradina (sometimes spelled Gerdiente) de Sille on May 18, 1670. He was a farmer and a member of the Reformed Dutch Church in Brooklyn, where he resided at Brooklyn Ferry. In his father's estate, he was willed more than his older brother, William, because he was handicapped by being lame. He became a prominent official in the government of New Nederland, being for some time a member of Governor Leister's council and a member of the Court of Exchequer of New Amsterdam. He lived to be eighty-five years of age, until 1724."
