--- Biographical Directory of the United States Congress

A great golf player, on the Walker Cup Team in 1934 and 1953 that went to St. Andrews, Scotland, and who made the best talk on the radio of the crowd.
Walker Cup, Largest Winning Margin, Foursomes (36-Hole Match)

US Amateur
1952 (Aug.) Jack Westland d. Al Mengert, 3 & 2; Seattle (Wash.) G. C.
Jack Westland, of the Everett (Wash.) Golf and Country Club, at 47 the oldest winner in the history of the Championship, climaxed a long and illustrious golfing career by defeating Al Mengert, of Spokane, Wash., 3 and 2. Westland had reached the final in 1931 and lost to Francis Ouimet.
This all-Northwest final developed, appropriately enough, at the Seattle Golf Club in the Pacific Northwest. The championship was preceded by the first match for The Americas Cup, among amateur teams representing Canada, Mexico and the United States, and the United States team had won by a narrow margin.
The late Joe Dey, longtime executive director of the USGA and a museum believer, had as one of his favorite displays a walking stick, instead of a golf ball or club that was significant in a championship. It was used by Jack Westland when he won the 1952 U.S. Amateur, at age 47, still the oldest. "It was the most important equipment in my bag," he explained to Joe. "At 47, I was weary."
