Kenner Casteel Kartchner, Jr. died April 23, 1993 at his home in Provo, Utah of ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).
Born September 30, 1921 in LaLuz, New Mexico to Electa Adlee Lindsey and Kenner Casteel Kartchner. Married Ellen Beverly Bowen September 5, 1947 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.He grew up in Arizona and attended Arizona State University, Gila College, Texas Tech and BYU. Graduated with a law degree from University of Utah Law School. He was a cadet in the Air Force and was a special agent for the FBI for many years. He then became a sales representative for L.G. Balfour Co. until his retirement.
He was an active member of the LDS Church. He served in many callings and also served a mission in the Eastern States. He had a great love of music and was a talented singer. He was a member of the Ralph Woodward Chorale for over 20 years.
He loved sports of all kinds. He was a radio sportscaster and was the announcer for various BYU athletic teams and events, including track and field, wrestling, baseball and swimming. He was a stadium announcer for home BYU football games for 19 years. He was often called "the voice of the Y". He had a great love for BYU and supported the school and athletic teams with untiring devotion. He also announced state high school football and basketball championships as well as other state high school events. He was the announcer for the National BCI High School Basketball Tournament held at Arizona State for 14 years.
Survived by his wife; four daughters and their families: Jane Jensen (Craig R.), Salt Lake; Shauna Miller (Greg), Provo; Ann Olsen (Don), Provo; Camille Cannon (Rex), Provo. Also his brothers and sisters: Merle Shumway, Provo; Afton Shreeve (Lyman Sidney), Provo; Stanley F. Kartchner (Wanda), Alburquerque; Jene O. Kartchner (Alberta), No. Salt Lake; also 13 grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Preceded in death by a brother, Lindsey V. Kartchner, and by an infant daughter, Cynthia Kartchner. He was greatly loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 27, 1993, 11 a.m. at the Pleasant View 2nd Ward LDS Chapel, 650 Stadium Avenue, Provo. Friends may call Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Berg Mortuary, 185 East Center Street, Provo and Tuesday one hour prior to services at the chapel.
Interment, Provo City Cemetery.
