William V. (Bill) Payne, a true gentleman, left his home here on earth and entered his heavenly home on March 14, 2005. Bill was born in Manhattan, Kansas on August 5, 1922, and he was one of seven children born to Mary Cobb Payne and Loyal Payne. He graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Physical Education. His love of athletics remained with him throughout his life and in 1975 he participated in track and field events at the Senior Olympics in California. He served his country in WWII as a Second Lt. in the 2nd and 82nd Airborne Infantry Divisions as a paratrooper. After his military service, he was employed for 40 years with Big Chief Drilling Company and retired in 1986 as Personnel Director. Bill was a nephew of the late William T. Payne, founder of Big Chief. Bill was a member of Parkway Hills Baptist Church in Plano, Texas and previously was a long-time member of First Baptist Church, Edmond, OK. Bill was an avid golfer and was a strong supporter of the Junior Golf Program. In 1999, he was given the Bill Nicklas Award in recognition of outstanding contributions to Junior Golf in Edmond. Bill was preceded in death by his parents; brothers and sisters, Ellen Payne Paullin, Edith Payne Darling, Kenyon T. and Loyal C. Payne. Also predeceasing him were his parents-in-law, Lexie and Howard Thompson and three brothers-in-law, Charles, Bob and Bill Thompson. Bill is survived by his wife of 57 years, Erma Jean, and their daughter Laura Payne Dronzek and her husband Dennis, of Plano, TX. Also surviving him are two sisters, Martha Payne Howe and her husband Dan, of McPherson, KS and Nell Payne Nutter of Newark, OH. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Wanda Couch and her husband Richard, of Ardmore, OK; Marianne Thompson of Matteson, IL; Eddie Thompson of Hebbronville, TX; brothers-in-law, Donald Thompson and his wife Lela, of Aurora, CO; Russell Thompson and his wife Latralle, of Frisco, TX; Roger Thompson and his wife Jo, of LaPorte, TX; and Jerry Thompson and his wife Colette, of Del City, OK. He is also survived by cherished nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
